become a journalist.

The following are ways you can support students at the Counter Academy to continue their journey. You will be supporting investigative reporting, strengthening independent Arabic journalism, and helping build a new generation of journalists and editors.

Tiers

For any tier below, patrons may select the student's country of origin from anywhere in the Arab region.

Tier 01
Entry Support €500 per student, annually

Foundational skills in journalism and the humanities.
Equip one student with the intellectual and editorial foundations to report critically, rigorously, and independently in Arabic.



Covers:



  • Learning to investigate power through rigorous reporting and investigation courses.
  • Telling engaging in-depth stories through storytelling tools and writing classes, and multiplatform storytelling.
  • Understanding the complexities and the nuanced and layered dynamics in the societies they cover through critical thinking courses in anthropology, feminist studies, political theory, literature, history, and economy.
  • Producing journalism rooted in context rather than sensationalism.
  • Learning how to work professionally with editors through tight cycles that focus on the full process from pitching through to publishable content.
Tier 02
Enabling Participation €1,500 per student, annually

Breaking structural inequality.
Talented people in the region often cannot afford to learn, even when programs are free, because survival takes priority. This tier enables them. For many students, this stipend makes participation possible.



Covers:



  • Monthly stipend paid to one student for one year.
  • Partial defrayal of living expenses, especially in countries where infrastructure does not provide the basics for online learning.
  • Compensation for time taken away from paid work, including young freelance professionals.
  • Enabling equal opportunity and attracting intellectually curious candidates from the region, who are also weighed down by many financial challenges during economically challenging times in the Middle East.
Tier 03
Launching Careers €2,500 per student, annually

From training to professional newsrooms.



Covers:



  • First newsroom experience: a two-month placement at the heart of the job.
  • Mentorship.
  • Publication.
  • Entering the profession.
  • Learning tasks required to make an impact as a full-time career journalist.
  • Exposure for future hires.
Tier 04
Removing Barriers €4,000 per student, annually

Directly addresses borders, inequality, systematic isolation, and the fragmentation of the Arab world, and provides an opportunity to learn in person from editors, teachers, and fellows coming from across the Arab world. Ensuring no student is excluded due to geography or circumstance.



Covers:



  • A nine-day immersive reporting and learning camp.
  • Belonging to a professional regional community..
  • Getting an opportunity for intellectual encounters with distinguished teachers and editors.
  • Crossing intellectual, experiential, journalistic, and educational isolation.
  • Camp participation: sessions, lectures, side activities, and the opportunity to meet exceptional editors, writers, journalists, and colleagues from the Arab world.
  • Coverage of every entangled, hidden expense – from visa denials to unaffordable flight routes and lack of local transport – ensuring no student is excluded due to geography or circumstance.
Tier 05
Transforming a Life €8,000 per student, annually

One student, fully supported for one academic year to be a journalist.



Covers:



  • This is the full journey and access to the full experience of rigorous journalism education.
  • You will be supporting the full cost for a student strengthening independent Arabic journalism.
  • You will support a complete transformation and provide holistic assistance for young Arab aspiring journalists.
  • Crossing intellectual, experiential, journalistic, and educational isolation.
  • You will help build a new generation of journalists and editors.
  • You will give a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to Arabs locked in systematic isolation and marginalization and denied access to intellectual opportunities.
